DeepSign AI is excited to announce its latest community appearance this week at the 58th Biennial National Association of the Deaf Conference in San Francisco, CA.
Representing DeepSign’s executive leadership team, Aimee Chou will co-present a workshop with Jeff Shaul, Sign-Speak Backend Engineer. The session, titled “Creating S.A.F.E. Zones for Automatic Interpreting,” includes an interactive overview on identifying risk factors, setting performance standards, and establishing accountability for AI’s potential impacts on primary communicators.
Together, the duo’s workshop is on behalf of Coalition for Sign Language Equity (CoSET), which kicked off in 2023 with members from state governments, private companies, nonprofits, and professionals across industries. CoSET’s long-term aim is to run a multilingual social and technical testbed.
Previously, Chou has collaborated with CoSET on a technical paper and in a team retreat during the SLxAI summit.
“I’m excited to once again re-join forces at NAD, this time in the Bay Area epicenter of the AI universe,” said Chou. “We have a historic opportunity to bring the urgent topic of sign language AI into timely alignment with NAD’s 145-year history of safeguarding deaf linguistic and civil rights.”
The conference, running June 30 - July 5, also offers several other workshops exploring Artificial Intelligence this year, including gamified ASL vocabulary learning, AI-powered communication tools, AI in Deaf Education, talks on Google AI accessibility, and more.
Participants of “Creating SAFE Zones for Automatic Interpreting” can earn 0.1 CEUs. It is open to registered participants of NAD’s conference and is suitable for participants at all levels of technical skills and career backgrounds.
